The Effective Prayer
There was this hot and sunny afternoon when I went to see one of my superiors. As I walked in, she was busy with some of my colleagues in the office, so I had to wait. While I was waiting, I couldn't but notice this snack and Coca-Cola drink on her table, and so I teased her a little and asked if I could take it, so she laughed and said, go ahead.
My other colleagues started making noise and they were like "Ma, we were here before him, and so on...". But the basic line is that, it's now mine. Guess what? I opened it in their presence and started helping myself
What is Prayer?
There are many definitions to prayer but this is the one I love. Prayer is simply soft discussion between two people. Soft in the sense that it could be an appeal or an admiration, or in most cases both. In the illustration I gave earlier, I first of all admired her and then made my request.
In our passage today, the disciples of Jesus saw how their Masters life was different from others. They noticed how each time their master speaks, demons tremble, sickness is broken, the dead brought back to life, and they noticed also that it had something to do with what he spends his time doing alone. Before Jesus, people have been praying, but they noticed that there was something different about the way Jesus prayed. So they asked, "Teach us how to Pray". And my honest and sincere prayer for all of us today is that, may the Lord teach us how to pray.
Jesus in response to their requests gave them the most powerful prayer on earth.
And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
I'm guessing Peter must have asked, is that all? Then Jesus went further to explain to them how it works. That our relationship with God the Father ought to be like friends and as friends, whenever we ask God for anything he would give it to us.
He said *_"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened._*
Many times, the reason we struggle and fail in the place of prayer is simply because we've not seen God as a friend. I too before now used to see prayer as one big deal because I was told if you've not prayed for 2 hours at once you've not started. And I was like 2 hours??? 😱. You know you have to go to the mountain or in the Church or in one time of the day for your prayers to be effective or to get answers and so because of this, prayers looked scary for me. Not until I understand that God wants to be my friend and pray is just simply friends talking.
Which one of you need to be at particular place or properly dressed up in other to talk to your best friend?
If our prayers must be effective, we must pray the Jesus' type of prayers. What are the type of prayers Jesus prayed?
1. Father I thank you for you hear me always (prayer of Thanksgiving & Faith).
2. Simply just Asking. Father I'm in need of this, I can't do it on my own, I need your help.
3. No special place. Learn to walk with God. Just the way you can't wait to snap and Selfie and share it with that your friend, move with God everywhere. He should be the first person you talk to about any matter and the last person you listen to before any decision.
4. Stop the noise making. There are so many noise these days. It is not by your shout or Tongues that get your prayers answered. We are God friends and not those 450 prophet of Baal.
When all this is done, then relax God is in control.
"Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart."
Philippians 4:6 GNT.
Shalom!
