STAYING IN TOUCH
When I was younger - a teenager, I was known for being so blunt. If I don't like you, I would just say it out. I don't stop to think about how the other person would feel about it, I was just concerned about myself. I remember back then, one day in church, I told one guy that I don't like him and I won't like him with no reason attached to it - just like that.
But as I became born again and in my walk with God, I've learnt to listen before I talk. Even if I have all my points and all the right words, I've learnt to sit and listen to the other person, to feel their heart. Permit me to share a story with you.
We moved into a new neighborhood, and I have some kids that come around that I do teach - give them dictations and help them out with reading. One day, one of those kids came to the house, but I noticed that each time she came close to speak or laugh, there was this foul odour. It was so bad that I was already about to speak harshly to this girl. I had all the "Hello, don't you used to take your bath? Don't you know that a girl is not supposed to be dirty? When was the last time you brushed your teeth?...." but I decided to just ask her a question. So I said "Chi, are you okay?" Her answer made me thank God that I wasn't quick to conclude and say all the RUBBISH in my head. She told me that she has not been feeling well for some days now and painfully, her parents haven't noticed. She was apparently having constipation for some days now.
Our passage today is one of those memory verses that one could easily go over and then think "Ah, I'm done". No you're not!
The book of John 11 is telling us about Jesus, His Disciples, His friend Lazarus and Lazarus' family. The Bible mentions that Jesus got a message (call) that His friend Lazarus is sick and Jesus told them that the sickness was not unto death but it was for the glory of God. So Jesus continued His work, preaching and He stayed two more days there. After two days, He told His disciples that Lazarus has fallen asleep that he was going to wake him up. And so Jesus went.
On arrival, He observed that Lazarus has been dead and buried for four days and there was a lot of sympathizers all around. When Martha, Lazarus sister saw Him, she went to meet Jesus and she said "“Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.". Jesus was trying to comfort her, telling her that He was the Resurrection and Life, but it wasn't sinking down well with her. So Martha left Jesus and went in to tell Mary that Jesus was around.
"You mean Jesus is here?" Mary asked. Then she quickly ran outside to meet Jesus. "When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
JESUS WEPT
John 11:32-35 NIV
Now, this was the part that made pause to think. Why did the ALMIGHTY Jesus cry? For us as humans when someone dies and we cry, it is because we are going to miss the person and we don't have the power to bring the person back to life. But Jesus had the power, in fact His main aim of going there was to raise Lazarus. Then why was He crying?
Jesus I don't understand you... Didn't you come there to raise, Lazarus? Why are now wasting time? Even to the point of Crying?
You won't understand JESUS WEPT until you look back at verses 33 & 34. The Bible says, when Jesus saw her weeping and all those with her, He was deeply moved. Jesus, the powerful preacher and teacher that was preaching for Martha suddenly couldn't preach anymore. He was TOUCHED.
Jesus didn't cry because the situation was beyond Him, he cried because He was Touched by their pain, by their emotions.
Sir, I know that you have all the right answers, and you've got all the how's, but when was the last time you were touched? Jesus had all the rights to be angry that they didn't believe him enough to raise the dead, but that wasn't important to him as to feel their pain.
No wonder Hebrews 4 says "Our High Priest is not one who cannot feel sympathy for our weaknesses. On the contrary, we have a High Priest who was tempted in every way that we are, but did not sin. Let us have confidence, then, and approach God's throne, where there is grace. There we will receive mercy and find grace to help us just when we need it.
Hebrews 4:15-16 GNB
To those far away from God.:
Thank God we have a Jesus that understands my weakness. He understands you too.
To the Christians.:
If we say we are God's Children then we must walk like him. Learn to show empathy. Stay in TOUCH.
Grace to You!
